The Passive Voice
Adjectives and adverbs have two things in common. They both modify another word and they both can show degrees of comparison.
Adjectives are used to modify a noun or pronoun.
Adverbs modify the meanings of verbs, adjectives and other adverbs.

As is the case of regular adverbs, comparative adverbs modify.
But in this case, they show a degree of comparison.

You use comparative adverbs when you want to compare two
people,
places,
or things.

Comparative adverbs are formed just like a comparative adjective is created.
If it's a short one-syllable word, adding an –er to the end will transform a regular adverb into a comparative adverb.

POSITIVE / COMPARATIVE
late / later
soon / sooner
tall / taller
long / longer
hard / harder
deep / deeper
close / closer
high / higher

For example:
Building this cathedral was long, but building a bridge to it was longer.

Other words add
more
and less
to form the comparative adverb.

POSITIVE / COMPARATIVE
carefully / more carefully, less carefully
happily / more happily, less happily
gracefully / more gracefully, less gracefully
slowly / more slowly, less slowly

For example:
We walked around Colosseum more slowly after the accident on the stairs.

There are some adverbs that cannot become comparative adverbs,
such as
sometimes,
never,
here,
there,
now,
then,
first,
again,
yesterday,
and daily.

Examples of some common Comparative Adverbs

fast – faster
quick – quicker
bright – brighter
recently – more recently
carefully – more carefully
slow – slower
early – earlier
high – higher
effectively – more effectively
horribly – more horribly

Some comparative adverbs exist in irregular forms.
They don't take the suffix –er nor do they need the words more or less.
The comparative adverb forms of these adverbs have totally different spellings.

For example:

POSITIVE / COMPARATIVE
little / less
good, well / better
badly / worse
far / farther
much, some / more
